PELVIC PAIN, URINARY INCONTINENCE, AND MORE

What is Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy?

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles within the pelvis involved in regulating the function and control of bowel and bladder systems, reproductive organs, postural stability, and abdominal organ support. Together with the respiratory diaphragm, low back muscles, and abdominal muscles, the pelvic floor muscles play a key role in all aspects of body stability and mobility. Pelvic rehabilitation is a specialty area of physical therapy focusing on restoring and maintaining optimal function of the pelvic floor muscles and surrounding tissues.

What to Expect

Let’s talk. During the first visit, we will spend most of our time together talking. We want to hear your story, learn how your struggles are affecting your lifestyle, and what your goals are for rehabilitation. After getting to know you and taking a medical history, we will perform a comprehensive physical examination tailored to your specific problems. Internal assessment is not required on the first visit, or ever if you are not comfortable with it. We start with a full-body movement screen: assessing your posture, range of motion, strength, back, hips, and how you move and breathe. Pelvic floor muscles can be examined externally or internally via the vaginal or rectal canals, based on your level of comfort and need.

After a comprehensive examination, we will work with you to develop a customized physical therapy treatment plan. Your treatment may include manual therapy, specific exercises, breathing training, postural stability, filling out a bowel and bladder diary, patient and family education, and much more.
